Travelers be wary; roads are snow-packed and icy

Heavy snowfall continues to hamper travelers, as the Kansas Department of Transportation said all roads are snow packed or icy, and that a multi-vehicle accident will keep I-70 closed until late evening.

The 32-vehicle pile-up killed one motorist, and caused the closing of the interstate in both directions from the Auburn Road/Kansas Highway 4 exit to milepost 313/K-177, which is a Manhattan exit.

Eastbound traffic is detoured to K-177 then across to U.S. Highway 24.

Westbound traffic is detoured to US-75 then across to U.S. 24.

KDOT opened two shelters for travelers: In McFarland, at 643 Wheeler, and in Maple Hill, at the Senior Center, 218 S. Main St.

KDOT spokeswoman Kimberly Qualls warned motorists to stay off the roads unless travel is necessary. She said drifting snow continues to make driving difficult, and KDOT cautioned that there are no clear diving lanes because of snow.
