Thieves saw off more than 500 parking meters

December 21, 2007

— Thieves have sawed off more than 500 downtown parking meters from their posts this year and walked away with them, city officials said.

The city of Atlanta has had to replace about 39 percent of its parking meter inventory this year because of the thefts. Although the meters don't contain much money, it costs about $500 to replace each one, said Sandra Jennings, deputy commissioner for the city's transportation office.

"Someone was actually cutting the pole and taking them so they could somehow open the meter head to get the money out," Jennings said.

The city is replacing them with more secure meters. Jennings said the parking meter program pays for itself.

How in the world does someone "saw off" 500 meters and nobody notice? I would think that it would be a rather suspicious looking act.

Must've been Cool Hand Luke. "What we have here is a failure to communicate."

Depending on what saw they used, sawing off a parking meter is no easy task.

Were they to use the same saw and the same amount of honest work, they'd quadruple the money they make stealing meters.

I would say pipe cutter would do it in about 2-3 minutes. A cordless portable bandsaw. I think it would be the pipe cutter, that would not make as much noise.

The 500 meters were probably stolen throughout the year rather than on a single day. Even for a city the size of Atlanta, that's a large number.
