Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 20, 1907: “Experts from Kansas City are here to examine the old steam engine at fire headquarters. Firemen say the machine should be sent in for a total overhaul since it is inadequate for the needs here. Officials want an expert opinion to decide what to do. : A new explosion in the mines at Connellsville, Pa., entombed more than 400 miners and the smoke pouring out of the holes makes rescue efforts impossible. It is felt there is not much chance there will be any survivors in this latest of a long line of recent accidents in mines. : A group of men were caught recently stealing wheat from William Schaake, Arthur Potts and Tom Terry and the members of the gang could wind up in the penitentiary, as they should. A younger member of the gang is due for reform school.”
