County to consider halting road-building

A moratorium on the creation of new roads or extending old ones will be considered at tonight’s Douglas County Commission meeting.

Commissioners said during their Monday meeting that they wanted the county planning staff to draw up a policy that would describe when it would make sense to extend a road. They would not grant requests for new or extended roads until that policy is developed.

Commissioners in recent weeks have received two requests from landowners or potential landowners to extend a road in a rural area.

Commissioners tonight also will discuss a request for a conditional-use permit that would allow construction of a water tower at the southwestern corner of U.S. Highway 40 and County Road 1023 northwest of Lawrence.

Commissioners will meet at 6:35 p.m. on the second floor of the courthouse, 1100 Mass.
