South wins city wrestling title

The South Junior High wrestling team won the city championship Dec. 10 at Central Junior High. It was the third straight title for the Cougars and 26th in the school’s history.

“It was ultra-exciting,” South coach Randy Streeter said. “We had a lot of guys step up when we needed them.”

South began the night with a 75-6 dual victory over Central and followed that with an equally impressive victory over Southwest. The title then came down to the Cougars and the West Warhawks – as it has two of the last three years.

South dominated West in the lower weights and led the dual by as many as 40 points going into the heavier divisions. West turned the tables in the upper weight classes, forcing the championship to come down to the 189-pound division.

South freshman Jerrid Cadue took to the mat and grabbed the points the Cougars needed to come away with a 51-42 victory and the championship.

“They (West) were tough in the upper divisions,” Streeter said. “And it came down to that last match. Whoever won that was going to win the whole thing.”

Cougar freshman Levi Flohrschutz – wrestling in the 130-pound division – completed an undefeated season and was one of several South wrestlers that joined the high school ranks last week. Freshman Caleb Tornedon contributed with dual victories, along with 112-pounder Andrew Denning. Hunter Haralson – wrestling at 103-pounds – joined Flohrschutz with an undefeated campaign.
