A Topeka-based company met only minor opposition when it asked city officials for help in buying and restoring the Lawrence Opera House at 642 Mass. to turn it into a national school for entertainers. The city commission tentatively set up a Dec. 21 hearing to discuss issuing about $2.2 million in industrial revenue bonds for the opera house project.

Lawrence Republican Wint Winter Jr. was chosen to fill the remaining two years of Jane Eldredge’s 2nd District term in the Kansas Senate. Winter, whose father was a former state senator from Ottawa, was elected on the first ballot at a meeting of the county GOP Central Committee.
