A 26-year-old Lawrence man was charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of a 2-year-old boy. The charge called the killing unintentional as the result of excessive force in an emotional incident.

KANU-FM, the Kansas University radio station knocked off the air when its transmission tower toppled, hoped to be broadcasting again soon using makeshift arrangements. It appeared sabotage had toppled the 605-foot tower, the same as had happened about 25 years earlier. A guy wire had been cut in the latest occurrence.

The local school district was trying to cut back on energy usage to spotlight conservation efforts and to cut rising district utility bills.
