Girls’ win gives them shot at tourney title

? Kristie Tiegreen scored 27 points, and Veritas Christian’s girls basketball team limited Elyria Christian to eight points in the first half in a 57-26 Veritas victory on Saturday in the Blue Bird Classic tournament.

The victory moved Veritas to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the tournament and kept the Eagles in position for the title of the round-robin tournament.

That remains to be seen, however, as the later Saturday games were called off due to bad weather.

To win the crown, Burrton – which beat Veritas in the opening round – would need to lose a game, and the final score would have to be in the 40s. The first tiebreaker is points allowed.

Regardless of the ultimate outcome, Veritas put itself in position with smothering defense.

“We came out today and had pretty good success with our fullcourt press,” Veritas coach Kevin Shelton said. “It was 20-6 in the first quarter, and Kristie had 14 of our 20.

The Eagles will play host to league rival Topeka Cair Paravel on Friday.
