Veritas splits in tourney

? Taeylr Shelton hit an eight-foot baseline jumper with six seconds remaining, and Veritas Christian defeated Goessel, 37-35, on Friday night in the Bluebird Classic high school girls basketball tournament.

Kristie Tiegreen had 15 points and 17 rebounds before fouling out with 5:46 remaining,

“We challenged the players – we don’t have Kristie on the floor, and someone has to step forward,” Veritas coach Kevin Shelton said. “I was really proud of how the girls pulled together. It was a great win for our program.”

Meaghan Holmes added eight points and 10 rebounds, and Marteka Carlton had seven points and 14 rebounds.

Veritas (2-1) will play McPherson Elyria Christian at 3 p.m. today as the tournament concludes.

In boys action, Veritas was upended by Goessel, 69-34.

Turnovers and a sluggish first half left the Eagles trailing 41-10 at halftime. But Veritas turned things around in the second half and outscored Goessel, 24-18, giving coach Doug Bennett reason for optimism heading into today.

“I was proud of the guys for not giving up,” Bennett said. “They battled all the way to the end, and hopefully we can carry that over into (today).”

Veritas will take on McPherson Elyria Christian at 4:30 p.m. today.
