Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 7, 1907: “It was announced today that at least 400 men are dead in a coal mine explosion in Fairmount, W. Va., and some observers say that the death toll could run well beyond that. There were 700 in the mine at the time and the company has already ordered 300 coffins. This could be the worst mining accident in American history. : We have learned by telephone that Rice Hall, the principal building at Washburn College in Topeka, burned to the ground this morning. : Mrs. Emeline Keller, 69, has died from injuries she received when horses ran away and she recently was thrown from a rig. She had seemed to be recovering from the incident, in which two others were hurt. : The Bell Brothers Piano Factory will close down tonight and will remain out of operation until the financial situation clears up. : The first Free State Legislature’s survivors, from 1857, are holding a reunion in Topeka. However, Lecompton was the state capitol when they met 50 years ago.”
