Failed breaker blamed for overnight power failure

December 7, 2007

A failed breaker is blamed in a power failure that affected 6,600 Westar Energy customers for about three hours late Thursday night.

Westar Energy spokeswoman Gina Penzig said power was restored to all customers by 12:05 a.m. today.

Penzig said it's unclear why the breaker failed, but it's not believed to be weather-related. "Sometimes those things just happen," Penzig said.

The power failure was reported at 8:55 p.m. after a problem at a Westar substation near 23rd Street and O'Connell Road.

The affected area stretched from 19th Street to North 1100 Road and east to Eudora.

I was just getting ready to sit down with my wife and play Halo for a few hours after we put our son to bed when this "tragedy" struck. Instead we were forced to just go to bed. Bummer.

The power outage totally ruined an evening of Wii-ing for me. Ironically, the Wii itself was on a UPS, but not the TV. Oh well.

Best place to find a Wii is Target early on a Sunday. I've bought two of them this year. Basically if you see the Wii console in the Target ad they have to have some in stock so subscribe to the Sunday LJ World and get up extra early to check the ad and rush over there if they're listed. They're open @ 8AM.

And dittos on the power outage ruining a perfectly good evening. I totally missed the 2nd half of the Bears/Redskins game and had to sit up and read to my daughter by candlelight. Bummer!

Fortunately, I got my "Wii-ing" done earlier in the evening so I had that out of the way.My 2 year old loves to watch Mario run around in Super Mario Galaxy, so I usually do that early. The Halo is our late night ritual. Who needs cable TV?
