Up to the Challenge

Racers brave elements to compete in Clinton run

Lori Lange had a hard time making herself get out of bed for her morning run Sunday.

It wasn’t so much the temperature – just above freezing – or the five-mile distance. It wasn’t so much the howling wind, either, the thought of the steep elevation changes or even the thought of splashing through a stream a couple of times in the blustery cold.

It wasn’t any one of those factors so much as a combination of them.

“It was tough getting out of bed,” said Lange, who nonetheless rolled out and was female masters winner of the five-mile portion of the Clinton Cross Country Challenge at Clinton State Park. “I seriously considered not doing it, but I said, ‘I can do this.’ I’m glad I did.

“At least it wasn’t as cold as last year.”

Curiously, last year’s event was Lange’s only other experience with trail running.

“I normally don’t do trail running,” she said. “That’s one of the reasons I do that race, because you know there won’t be a lot of crazy people out there doing it.”

Lange, of Lawrence, was masters female winner in 43 minutes, 6 seconds. Kelley Johnson, of Kansas City, Mo., was women’s overall winner in 37:23.

James White II, Seneca, was the overall men’s five-mile winner in 29:50, and Carl Matuszek, of Chatham, N.Y., was male masters winner in 34:44.

Winners in the two-mile race were: Jim Beiter, Lawrence, overall male, 14:09; Keith Dowell, Lawrence, masters male, 14:14; Kristen Brosnan, Kansas City, Mo., overall female, 15:27; and Susan Young, Lawrence, masters female, 19:09.

Lange considers herself a fitness runner, though she competes in road races, ranging from 5Ks to half marathons, just about every month.

Though she pounds pavement, she enjoys the change of pace running off-road.

“Trail running is just different,” Lange said. “It’s fun and more challenging. It’d be worth the drive to go out there to do it, but I just don’t.

“Just being out in the woods, you’re out in nature, rather than on pavement. It’s nice to have that feel in the wild. I probably should do more. I did a hike at the Grand Canyon last year, and I did run down a trail out on a point, and I thought at that time it was really fun and I should do it more often. It’s just a matter of convenience. I just : don’t. Maybe I should do more. It brings out the competitiveness in me.”
