Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 5, 1907: “F.D. Colburn, secretary of the Kansas Board of Agriculture, has announced that the farming profits in Kansas are the best on record. Wheat and corn prices made up for the shortages in the yields and there has been a steady increase in farming operations. Many in farming profited well the past year, including most farmers in the Lawrence area. : ‘Peairs Addition’ was admitted to the city at the council meeting last night. It includes all the buildings of Haskell Institute and puts that school within the city limits. As federal property, Haskell cannot be taxed by the city but the school does now have the police and fire protection the city can afford. : Of 46 foreigners who applied for citizenship in Pittsburg, 21 failed to pass the required examination.
