Commission asks for report on traffic project

City commissioners want more information about potential traffic problems in North Lawrence before proceeding on a project to rebuild the intersection of North Second and Locust streets.

Commissioners received a briefing at their Tuesday evening meeting about major roadwork that will occur next summer on the Kansas Turnpike. Some of that work is expected to increase the amount of traffic that will exit the turnpike and travel through North Lawrence.

That has commissioners concerned because the North Second and Locust project is scheduled to be under way at the same time. Several commissioners expressed concerns about traffic backups making it difficult for emergency vehicles to get in and out of North Lawrence.

Commissioners said they wanted a detailed staff report on the feasibility of delaying the project for a year.
