Third person charged in shooting begins trial

Opening arguments begin today for a Lawrence woman charged in a shooting conspiracy in Franklin County District Court.

Kay F. Gaillard-Taylor is one of four people charged in the December 2006 shooting in Ottawa of Michael Miller. She faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and conspiracy.

Miller, a Lawrence man who survived the shooting, was to testify the next day as a victim in a Douglas County aggravated battery case. In the Douglas County case, Louis Galloway was convicted of breaking into Miller’s home and attacking him. Galloway was sentenced to nearly 12 years in prison. He faces no charges in the Ottawa shooting.

It is the second trial for Gaillard-Taylor after a mistrial in October when a judge ruled some recorded evidence had not been turned in by the Ottawa Police Department. Prosecutors said the mistake was inadvertent.
