Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 4, 1907: “It will not be very long now before the well-meaning old cranks will be crying out against the awful idolatry of teaching children to believe in Santa Claus. : The wings of the eagle on the new gold pieces are only half-extended but the gold pieces will probably fly just as fast as the old kind. : Forty-one licenses have been issued to automobilists in Lawrence this year. That is quite an increase over last year’s license list. The cost of a license for one year is one dollar. There are 17 styles of cars represented with touring cars the favorites. The evaluation prices listed for the machines range from $500 to $3,500. There is one electric car in the city and dealers are quite pleased with the rising number of owners. : With more than a thousand delegates present, the National Rivers and Harbors Congress convened today in Washington. : It is the consensus among members of the National Republican Central Committee meeting in Kansas City that Kansas City will get the national convention of the party next year.”
