Old Home Town – 25 years ago

State Sen. Jane Eldredge, R-Lawrence, announced she would resign her legislative post to join her family in Washington, D.C., where her husband Charles was serving as director of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American Art. The 38-year-old senator originally said she would complete her senate term but said family ties had dictated the move. Her replacement was to be chosen by Republican committee members here and then approved by the governor.

State agencies were notified of the budget cuts in store for them under John Carlin’s $84 million belt-tightening program to prevent a deficit in the state treasury.

Tornadoes raked parts of eastern Kansas, but the Lawrence area got only high winds and a quarter-inch of needed rain.

Alleging she had been discriminated against because of sex and race, a Kansas University anthropology professor, Dorothy Willner, filed suit seeking $3 million in damages from KU and 12 individuals. She contended she had been the victim of a discrimination conspiracy among KU administrators and several of her departmental colleagues.
