Cowboys crush UW; Knight leaves loss

Washington's Jon Brockman, rear, defends as Oklahoma State's James Anderson shoots. Oklahoma State won, 96-71, Saturday in Stillwater, Okla.

? James Anderson’s high school coach ate breakfast Saturday with members of Oklahoma State’s basketball team, then gave his former star some advice.

“He just said, ‘Do what you do,'” recounted Anderson’s teammate, Terrel Harris, noting that Anderson “has a knack for scoring.”

Anderson apparently listened well. He continued his early-season string of strong performances, scoring 22 points as the Cowboys rolled past Washington, 96-71, in the Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series.

Oklahoma State (3-3) shot 58.2 percent from the field as the Cowboys moved to 26-25 all-time against teams from the Pacific-10 Conference. That includes an 8-3 mark against Washington.

Washington (4-3) led only twice, both times in the first half, and proved unable to stop a barrage of 3-pointers by Oklahoma State that gave the unranked Cowboys control of the game. Oklahoma State finished 11 of 21 from 3-point range, a 52.4-percent clip.

In losses last week to Marquette and Illinois in the EA Sports Maui Invitational, the Cowboys shot 39 percent and 30.6 percent from the field, respectively, and went a combined 12 of 46 from 3-point range.

By contrast, the Cowboys’ 11 3-pointers on Saturday was a season high.

“Everybody shot well today because all of us were in the gym at night at one point or another this week,” Oklahoma State point guard Byron Eaton said. Coaches “just told us to shoot with confidence. Coach told us that we need to start making teams play from behind. We are always trying to play catch-up, but (having a lead) helped us out a lot.”

Centenary 70, Texas Tech 66

Bossier, La. – Nick Stallings had 17 points, and tiny Centenary came from behind to upset Texas Tech after Red Raiders coach Bob Knight left the arena at halftime because he felt ill.

Texas Tech (5-3) led 35-32 at halftime and by many as 14 points in the second half.

As Knight left at halftime, about 20 to 30 Centenary fans baited him. He stopped and walked back, pointing his finger.

“We came here to play Centenary. Just think about that,” Knight said.

Texas Tech is a Big 12 school with total enrollment of 28,200; Centenary’s 910 students make it the nation’s smallest Division I basketball program.

Knight didn’t return for the second half. Several minutes into the half, Texas Tech sports information director Randy Farley went to look for him. When Farley returned, he told reporters that Knight was feeling ill and his son, Tim, had driven him to the team hotel to rest, according to Centenary sports information director David Pratt.

California 86, Missouri 72

Berkeley, Calif. – Patrick Christopher scored 11 of his 18 points in the second half, and California fought back in the final 20 minutes to preserve its perfect record.

Ryan Anderson added 15 points, 11 rebounds and made all seven of his free throws for the Golden Bears, off to their best start since winning the first seven games in the 1994-95 season.

Tigers leading scorer Stefhon Hannah had 14 points and nine assists before fouling out with 1:47 left. He averaged 20.8 points on 53 percent shooting over his previous four games.
