From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 30, 1907: “Secretary of War W.H. Taft, due to be the next president of the United States, passed through here on the Union Pacific today and only a few greeted him when he got off his rail car during a brief stop. There was no notice of his coming and the stop was too brief to arrange any gathering. He is sure to succeed Theodore Roosevelt as president in the coming election. He is, in effect, the next president of the United States. : While there appears to be no immediate danger in the local water supply, as some rumors had it, the time is here to consider expanding the water plant to serve a growing town. The plant is too small to handle much more growth and city leaders need to act soon on this issue. :Haskell Institute promises to have one of the swiftest and best football teams in the MIssissippi Valley again this year. “
