Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 27, 1907: “Work has been started on the grading and leveling of the race track at Driving Park and by the time of the county fair Sept. 17-26 it will be in first-class condition. It appears some excellent runners will be here for the many events. : An active search is under way for the man who stole the horse and buggy from Jack Kelsey’s barn Friday night. : The annual rise of 25 percent in the prices of cranberries has arrived early this year. Usually that happens just before Thanksgiving. . . . The public schools of Lawrence will open Sept. 9 after three months of vacation. About 560 pupils are expected, about the same as last year.”
