Manning flashes midseason form in Colts’ victory

? Tony Dungy wanted Saturday night’s preseason game to be a tuneup for the defending Super Bowl champions.

Peyton Manning was thinking more about cleaning up.

The Super Bowl MVP threw three first-half touchdowns and was nearly perfect as the Indianapolis Colts routed Detroit, 37-10, for Indy’s second win in 13 preseason games.

“Detroit was pretty active in their blitzes, and when they’re doing that, it’s going to give you some chances to throw the ball,” Manning said. “Our execution in the passing game was pretty good.”

Manning made it look easy.

When he last faced the Lions on Thanksgiving in 2004, Manning threw six TDs, a number he might have matched Saturday had he not been replaced at halftime of a meaningless game.

But in what was likely to be the final preseason appearance for most of Indy’s starters, Manning appeared to be in midseason form. He completed 23-of-27 for 233 yards and three TDs and made the unlikely seem routine by converting six first downs of 10 yards or longer.

Manning is now 31-of-40 for 331 yards with no interceptions in three weeks, and the offense played well enough against Detroit that coach Tony Dungy uncharacteristically changed the script by pulling his starters at halftime. Dungy had intended to use them into the third quarter.

“We were shooting for 35 to 40 plays but we ran 45 in the first half, so we decided to pull them out,” Dungy said. “We did see some good things tonight, and that’s what we wanted.”

Browns 17, Broncos 16

Denver – Preseason games don’t count and neither do touchdowns that are erroneously ruled incompletions, as Brady Quinn discovered. Quinn was efficient and effective for the second straight game, although it probably wasn’t enough to win him the starting job over Charlie Frye.

Quinn threw a pass in the left flat that Joshua Cribbs turned into a nifty 20-yard touchdown to break a 10-10 tie in the third quarter, but the rookie from Notre Dame was robbed of another apparent TD toss on Cleveland’s previous possession.

Seahawks 30, Vikings 13

Seattle – Matt Hasselbeck, playing for the first time since he had a single series in the exhibition opener two weeks ago, completed 12 of 17 passes for 129 yards and threw an interception. Most of his throws were short and many sailed from where he wanted them in the final extensive rehearsal for both team’s starters before the season begins Sept. 9. But Hasselbeck took advantage of starting on average from Seattle’s 46 in the first half to lead the Seahawks to scores on four of five drives.

Redskins 13, Ravens 7

Landover, Md. – Lightning delayed the start for more than an hour, then another storm halted the game for good shortly after halftime. The Redskins led the Ravens 13-7 Saturday night when play was stopped with 11:38 remaining in the third quarter- just after the stadium lights dimmed while an incomplete pass from Kyle Boller to Marcus Freeman was in mid-flight. Fifty minutes later, with the radar showing dangerous storms throughout the area, the NFL commissioner’s office determined that the game would not resume.

By then, most of the meaningful football had been played. Both teams had sent mostly reserves onto the field in the second half after using their starters for the first.

Buccaneers 31, Dolphins 28

Miami – Jeff Garcia played three series, and he helped Tampa Bay beat Miami with a 26-yard touchdown to Joey Galloway on his final pass.

Bruce Gradkowski brought the Bucs from behind twice in the fourth quarter and threw touchdown passes of six yards to Earnest Graham and one yard to Paris Warren.

Miami’s Trent Green, formally awarded the No. 1 job this week, pulled off a trick play for one touchdown and threw for another to cap an 18-play drive. He also threw a screen pass that linebacker Cato June intercepted and returned two yards for a score.

Texans 28, Cowboys 16

Houston – Matt Schaub and Houston became the first team to score a touchdown against Dallas’ starters this preseason on Saturday night. They didn’t stop at just one.

Schaub connected with Andre Johnson early in the second quarter and found speedy rookie Jacoby Jones just before halftime to lead the Texans.

Schaub looked sharp against a defense that flustered Denver last week.

Bears 31, 49ers 28

Chicago – Rex Grossman showed his good and bad sides. He fumbled another snap and had an interception returned 52 yards for a touchdown. But along with the mistakes came the moments of brilliance. Grossman played the first half and passed for 211 yards and two touchdowns, and the defending NFC champions held off San Francisco.

Jets 20, Giants 12

East Rutherford, N.J. – There is no doubt Eli Manning is the leader of the New York Giants offense. The Jets can’t say the same with Kellen Clemens pushing Chad Pennington for the starting quarterback job.

Clemens came off the bench in the second half and engineered two third-quarter touchdown drives against the Giants’ backups to lead the Jets.

The Jets (2-1) scored twice in a little over four minutes to take command.
