— Royals outfielder Mark Teahen was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday, the most significant of several moves made by the club.

Teahen has a hyperextended left elbow and forearm strain he sustained while attempting to make a diving catch Aug. 18 at Oakland. The move to the DL is retroactive to Aug. 19.

The Royals purchased the contract of right-hander Billy Buckner from Triple-A Omaha, where he was 9-7 with a 3.78 earned-run averaged in 27 appearances, including 15 starts. Manager Buddy Bell said Buckner would be used in middle and long relief.

Buckner, a second-round pick in the 2004 draft, has never pitched in the majors.

The Royals also moved designated hitter Mike Sweeney, who had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee last month, to the 60-day disabled list. But Sweeney began a minor-league rehab assignment Friday with Omaha and could be activated Sept. 1.

John Thomson, who gave up eight runs and nine hits in 3 1/3 innings Tuesday for Omaha, was recalled from his rehab assignment. Thomson went on the disabled list July 16 with lower back spasms.

"He's got something going on with his wrist," Bell said. "We're not sure what it is. We're not exactly sure when he'll be back, if he'll be back at all before the end of the year."
