Two women recovering from late-night crash

Two local women are recovering from a fiery car crash west of Lawrence that occurred Tuesday night.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Deanna Hamby, 38, Lawrence, was driving a 1990 Mercury Topaz south in the northbound lane of the Kansas Highway 10 bypass.

Her vehicle collided head-on with a 2000 Pontiac driven north by Eleanor Lohmann, 57, Lecompton, about a half-mile south of the I-70/Lecompton interchange. Highway Patrol Master Trooper Terry Berner said the Topaz spun around and caught fire, and Hamby was pulled from the burning vehicle by a Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy and a witness. The accident occurred about 9:20 p.m. Tuesday.

Both women went to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Hamby remained there Wednesday in fair condition. Lohmann was treated and released.

Berner said the highway patrol continues to investigate whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
