Trial on federal gun charges delayed

To give his new attorney more time to prepare, a federal judge has delayed a Lawrence man’s trial on federal gun charges to November.

Major C. “Ja Ja” Edwards, 28, faces six counts of being a felon in possession of firearms or ammunition. Edwards, who has a 2000 cocaine-dealing conviction, was arrested Oct. 23 in Mississippi on a federal warrant and later indicted on the federal charges. Police had wanted to speak with him in connection with the investigation into the killing of Lawrence hip-hop artist, Anthony “Clacc” Vital, 28.

Edwards’ trial was scheduled to begin this month, but U.S. District Judge Carlos Murguia moved it to Nov. 5 after Edwards’ attorney G. Gordon Atcheson requested more time to review the case he took over in June.

Before his arrest, Douglas County Sheriff’s investigators were looking for Edwards because he was believed to have spent time with Vital the day before someone found his body west of Lawrence.

No one has been charged with killing Vital, and Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson said Monday no new information was available in the case.
