Old Home Town – 100 years ago
From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 20, 1907: “William H. Taft, U.S. secretary of war, today announced he would seek the presidency and called for fellow Republicans to unite and elect him as the successor to Theodore Roosevelt. : The Ottawa newspaper has a touching item about a mother and daughter who supposed each other to be dead for 20 years and were united in little Sibleyville in Douglas County. : Today is the Salvation Army picnic for some 140 mothers and children of modest means. : Warrants were sworn out this morning for three men who had failed to pay their $3 poll tax. Their fines amount to $16.50 each.”
