Clemens logs 353rd victory

Yankees 5, Tigers 2

New York – Roger Clemens won in his return from a suspension, and Bobby Abreu hit a go-ahead homer that clanked off the foul pole, carrying New York over Detroit. The Rocket walked none in his 353rd career win.

Clemens gave up Cameron Maybin’s first major-league homer, but pitched out of trouble for six innings, striking out eight to match his season high. Jorge Posada also homered and finished with three hits for the Yankees, who took control by scoring four times in the sixth.

Mariano Rivera tossed a hitless ninth for his 20th save in 23 chances, a huge sigh of relief for New York. Rivera struggled in his previous two outings, blowing a save and taking a loss, before consecutive days off.

Clemens (5-5) gave up 10 hits, his most since allowing 11 on Sept. 19, 2005, with Houston at Pittsburgh, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Orioles 5, Blue Jays 3

Toronto – J.R. House homered to help Steve Trachsel win for the first time in 10 starts. Trachsel (6-7) allowed three runs on eight hits in 62â3 innings and won for the first time since June 8.

Right-hander Jim Hoey relieved Trachsel after a pair of two-out singles in the seventh and got pinch-hitter Vernon Wells to ground into an inning-ending fielder’s choice. Trachsel, who had a walk and a strikeout, had six no-decisions in between wins.

Hoey pitched around a double in the eighth, and Danys Baez pitched a perfect ninth for his second save in three opportunities.

Indians 8. Devil Rays 1

St. Petersburg, Fla. – Jake Westbrook gave up one run over seven innings, and Asdrubal Cabrera hit his first major-league homer.

Grady Sizemore also went deep for the AL Central-leading Indians, who extended their advantage over the Tigers to 11â2 games.

Rangers 5, Twins 0

Minneapolis – Marlon Byrd homered and drove in four runs, sending Kameron Loe and Texas past Minnesota. Loe (6-9) came off the disabled list and threw five shutout innings, overcoming five walks by ending four of those innings with two runners on. The Twins stranded a man on third base three times, and Boof Bonser (5-10) lost his eighth straight decision.

Red Sox 10, Angels 5

Boston – David Ortiz’s grand slam capped a six-run fifth inning, and Curt Schilling got his first win since a one-hitter two months ago.

Mariners 7, White Sox 5

Seattle – Kenji Johjima hit a tiebreaking RBI single in Seattle’s four-run sixth, and the Mariners handed Chicago its season-high seventh straight loss.
