Angels salvage split with Sox

Red Sox 8-5, Angels 4-7

Boston – Orlando Cabrera singled to tie the game and scored on Vladimir Guerrero’s two-run double as Los Angeles rallied off Eric Gagne in the ninth to beat Boston and split a day-night doubleheader. Clay Buchholz (1-0) gave Boston six strong innings in his major-league debut in the afternoon.

Indians 2, Devil Rays 1

St. Petersburg, Fla. – Paul Byrd made two early runs stand up, holding Tampa Bay to one run in six innings. Byrd (11-5) scattered eight hits and a walk, striking out five. He worked out of several jams and held Tampa Bay to 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

Rafael Perez and Rafael Betancourt combined for two scoreless innings before Joe Borowski pitched the ninth for his 34th save in 38 opportunities.

Borowski got Akinori Iwamura to fly out to deep right with the tying run at second to end it.

Blue Jays 5, Orioles 2

Toronto – A.J. Burnett won his second straight start, and Frank Thomas hit his 506th career home run. Brian Roberts homered for Baltimore, which has lost five straight games at Rogers Centre.

Burnett (7-6) gave up two runs and three hits over 61â3 innings, walking three and striking out six.

Mariners 5, White Sox 4

Seattle – Miguel Batista took a shutout into the seventh inning, and Raul Ibanez continued his sudden surge with three hits to lead Seattle. Ibanez hit his seventh home run in 10 games – he had six in his first 96 games – while Jose Vidro also had two RBIs.

Twins 2, Rangers 1, 10 inn.

Minneapolis – Nick Punto scored on a wild pitch with nobody out in the 10th inning to lift Minnesota. Matt Guerrier (2-4) got the win after pitching one inning and allowing two hits.

Yankees 6, Tigers 1

New York – Andy Pettitte pitched eight innings to win his fourth straight start, and Jason Giambi homered twice.
