Tigers take lead in Central

Tigers 6, Indians 2, 10 inn.

Cleveland – The staggering Detroit Tigers have the AL Central all to themselves – for at least one day.

Magglio Ordonez hit a three-run homer in Detroit’s four-run 10th inning as Detroit moved one game ahead of Cleveland in the up-for-grabs division.

Ordonez’s 22nd homer, a shot to left off Joe Borowski (2-5), broke it open for the Tigers, who were missing two regulars because of the flu and had been playing lately as if their whole roster had come down with something.

Curtis Granderson, whose all-out diving catch in the eighth kept it tied 2-2, walked to open the 10th and went to third on Ryan Raburn’s bloop single. Gary Sheffield’s RBI single gave Detroit a 3-2 lead.

Indians pitching coach Carl Willis made a quick visit to settle down Borowski. The right-hander made a mistake anyway as Ordonez ripped his first pitch over the wall in left.

Blue Jays 4, Angels 1

Toronto – Roy Halladay pitched his major league-leading fifth complete game, and Toronto took advantage of four errors to beat Los Angeles.

Halladay (14-5) won his third straight start and improved to 10-1 with a 3.36 ERA at home this season. He allowed one run and four hits, walked none and struck out two.

After giving up a leadoff walk to Gary Matthews Jr. in the second inning, Halladay retired the next 11 batters, a streak that ended with a bunt single by catcher Jeff Mathis leading off the sixth.

Red Sox 2, Devil Rays 1

Boston – Coco Crisp singled in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth three batters after Mike Lowell had tied the game with a homer, and Boston beat Tampa Bay.

Eric Gagne (3-0) struggled in his two previous outings but he struck out the side in the ninth for his first win since being traded by Texas on July 31.

The dramatic rally finished a game dominated by strong performances by two 23-year-old left-handers, Jon Lester and Scott Kazmir.

Athletics 4, White Sox 3

Oakland, Calif. – Jack Cust hit solo home runs in his first two at-bats to help Lenny DiNardo win his fourth straight decision.

Cust homered in the first and again leading off the fourth for his 19th and 20th home runs of the season and his second career multihomer game.

Orioles 12, Yankees 0

New York – Aubrey Huff hit a grand slam, and Daniel Cabrera pitched two-hit ball into the seventh inning.

Twins 11, Mariners 3
