From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 12, 1907: “A wife of a section hand on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway was awakened by a noise near Marceline, Mo., and determined that a bridge had washed out. She managed to stop a train that could have been wrecked and saved many lives and a good deal of equipment. Excited and delighted passengers actually poured gold coins into her lap after they heard what she had done. : Johnny and George, the little team of black horses that have pulled the hook and ladder wagon for the local fire department the past 12 years, have been sold to a Kansas City man and will be shipped there soon. The new horses being trained weigh around 1,300 pounds each, much bigger than Johnny and George, which long have had adoring citizens.
