Boston’s Beckett wins 15th

Red Sox 6, Orioles 2

Baltimore – Josh Beckett came within one out of a shutout and recorded his 15th victory, and Julio Lugo and J.D. Drew had two RBIs apiece to help Boston beat Baltimore.

Beckett (15-5) allowed eight hits, struck out eight and walked none in 82â3 innings. He was lifted after Miguel Tejada hit a run-scoring single, and Kevin Millar followed with an RBI double.

Manny Delcarmen walked Aubrey Huff before Jonathan Papelbon retired Melvin Mora with two on for his 27th save in 29 chances. Baltimore is the only team in the majors that has not been blanked this season.

Drew had three hits and Dustin Pedroia was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Red Sox, who went 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position. Pedroia is 18-for-38 (.474) in his last 10 games.

The game drew an announced crowd of 49,242 – the sixth-largest in the 16-year history of Camden Yards.

Yankees 11, Indians 2

Cleveland – Alex Rodriguez kept up his unrelenting surge against Cleveland – six homers in five games – and Mike Mussina earned his 100th win with the Yankees.

Rodriguez hit a pair of two-run homers as the hottest team in the majors did everything right. Jason Giambi added a pinch-hit homer, and Jose Molina had a career-high four hits.

New York moved 14 games over .500 (65-51) for the first time this season, an emphatic turnaround for a team that was stranded 141â2 games out of first place May 29. The Yankees have stormed into contention in the AL East – five games back of Boston – by going 22-8 since the All-Star break.

Tigers 5, Athletics 2

Detroit – Magglio Ordonez homered, and Justin Verlander won for the first time in four weeks. Verlander (12-4) hadn’t won since July 15 and gave the Tigers just their second win from a starter in 24 games.

Devil Rays 3, Rangers 0

Arlington, Texas – Edwin Jackson pitched a four-hitter for his first career complete game. Jackson (3-11) struck out eight, walked one and allowed only one runner past second base in Tampa Bay’s first shutout of the season. Delmon Young doubled twice and scored for the Devil Rays, who had been the only major-league team without a shutout this year.

Mariners 7, White Sox 6

Chicago – Yuniesky Betancourt hit his first career grand slam, and Raul Ibanez had a three-run homer. The Mariners have won 10 of 14 after losing a season-high seven straight.

Angels 4, Twins 3

Anaheim, Calif. – John Lackey earned his 15th win, and Maicer Izturis hit a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning.
