Old Home Town – 100 years ago
From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 10, 1907: “Lawrence is virtually cut off from the outside world because of a strike by Western Union Telegraph people in Kansas City. Only postal wires are open now. : There have been four heat prostration cases here because of the high temperatures and horses and cattle are also victims of the torrid conditions. Most of the ailing workers were working inside on buildings at KU, such as Snow Hall. : Deputy sheriff Sel Ray who was in a joint during a recent raid has finally resigned, as many had been demanding. He had hopes of becoming the sheriff but his hopes are shattered now. : As many as 100 top people are due here next week for the Sutton hog sale. Profits are due to run high.”
