The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim of Sunday’s drowning at Clinton Lake.

James Michael Whitaker, 33, of Lawrence, was at a family gathering with six other people at Bloomington Park, on the lake’s southwest side, when he went under the water.

As he was trying to swim from the shore to a boat that had other family members on it, Whitaker dipped below the water’s surface. He later was pulled from the lake by bystanders and taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he died at 3:27 p.m. Monday.
