The Lawrence chapter of the March of Dimes plans a fundraiser this week to help support research to prevent birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.

The organization will host a Jail & Bail event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at Montana Mike's Steakhouse, 1015 Iowa. The event will involve "jailing" prominent Lawrence residents inside the restaurant. The participants are released once they raise enough "bail" money from members of the public.

The public can stop by the restaurant to make contributions.

This has got to be one of the all time stupid fund raisers. It makes a mockery of jail and points out the ability of the wealthy to get out with money. Why don't they do an AIDS and Treatment fund raiser? You could pretend you have AIDS and if you raise enough money you get treatment. Just think about the phone call. Hello Ms. Smith, I am raising money for AIDS and Treatment. If I can raise $1000.00 I can leave. Would you mind helping me? Have a good day! Maybe a better name for the fund drive would be "Life or Death".

Jail and Bails are just a fun way to raise a little money for a great cause. March of Dimes is not affiliated with AIDS awareness or treatment programs. Besides, $20 a pop hardly qualifies donors as wealthy. I understand your quirky little analogy but you obviously don't have a clue. Keep it up though, I'm sure you made someone laugh.
