Old Home Town – 100 Years Ago
From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 7, 1907: “Several citizens are starting a movement to crack down on ‘jay drivers,’ those in autos, rigs and on bicycles who drive recklessly and dangerously. ‘It seems the jay driver invariably takes the wrong side of the street,’ said one frustrated observer. : Twenty-eight years ago, N.P. Deming and the late KU Chancellor Marvin planted a bushel and a half of walnuts on the spot now called Marvin’s Grove, and Deming said to Marvin: ‘I hope we will both live to crack walnuts under these trees.’ It was a project that has paid great dividends for the campus.”
