Cards tie consecutive-hit mark

A lone baseball fan looks at the colorful sunset from the club level at Coors Field during the Milwaukee Brewers-Colorado Rockies game. The Rockies won, 6-2, Monday in Denver.

Cardinals 10, Padres 5

St. Louis – St. Louis tied a major-league record with 10 consecutive hits in a 10-run fifth inning, with pitcher Braden Looper and Aaron Miles getting two each in a victory over San Diego on Monday night.

Looper opened the inning with a single and then, with the Cardinals up 8-3, bunted for another hit. Miles followed both times with singles, the latter driving in a run.

The streak was broken when David Eckstein hit a sacrifice fly, and So Taguchi ended the inning by grounding into a double play.

Scott Rolen’s three-run homer put St. Louis ahead 7-3 and chased starter David Wells (5-8). Mike Thompson entered, and Ryan Ludwick homered on his first pitch.

The Cardinals ended a five-game losing streak during which they were outscored 41-11 by Pittsburgh and Washington.

Astros 2, Cubs 1, 10 innings

Houston – Eric Munson hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th to give Houston the victory.

Chicago threatened in the 10th against Brad Lidge (3-1) when Jason Kendall led off with a single, took second on a sacrifice and advanced on a flyout. Lidge struck out Cliff Floyd.

Ryan Theriot doubled twice for the Cubs, who have lost four of five.

Rockies 6, Brewers 2

Denver – Brad Hawpe and Matt Holliday homered to lead Colorado over Milwaukee, which has lost 10 of 14 games but still leads the NL Central by one game over Chicago.

Prince Fielder hit his league-leading 33rd homer, and Ryan Braun also connected for Milwaukee.

Giants 3, Nationals 2, 11 inn.

San Francisco – Randy Winn hit a bases-loaded single with one out in the 11th inning to lead San Francisco. Barry Bonds failed to hit his record 756th home run. Nationals rookie John Lannan held Bonds hitless.
