Journal-World named Newspaper of the Year

Suburban Newspapers of America takes note of high-quality writing

Suburban Newspapers of America on Monday named the Lawrence Journal-World Newspaper of the Year for 2007.

It is the second time in three years the newspaper has won first place in the contest that honors newspapers for general excellence, including news, writing and design, as well as advertising, marketing and press reproduction.

The Journal-World competed in the category of daily newspapers with a circulation under 30,000. The newspaper placed second in 2006.

“Overall, the quality of the writing is very high. High marks for the enterprise in these issues,” the judges said. “Good news selections, interesting stories, good use of images throughout.”

The Beacon News of Aurora, Ill., placed second, the Southeast Missourian of Cape Girardeau, Mo., was third and the Sierra Vista Herald in Sierra Vista, Ariz., received an honorable mention.

SNA is composed of 2,000 newspapers across North America.

In January, the Journal-World collected 11 newswriting and editing awards from SNA, the most in the nation for the second consecutive year.
