In Douglas County’s five-way primary election for the Republican nomination for the Kansas 2nd Congressional District post, Morris Kay of Lawrence engulfed Bill McCormick, Dennis Taylor, R.R. Anderson and Harold Haun. Kay, 50, was to face Democrat Jim Slattery in the general election. Slattery had no primary opposition. Kay had wound up with 3,582 local votes while Slattery had 2,206.

In the County Commission Republican primary, Hank Booth won by at least a 5-1 margin over former sheriff Fred Broeker and Kevin Regan.
