Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 4, 1907: “The Kansas City Journal says that Kansas and Missouri have outstanding universities and points out that ‘this big Central West of ours is big enough for two great universities, which our schools are becoming.’ Missouri had an enrollment of 2,292 last year and Kansas University was outranked by only four other schools in the country from the standpoint of enrollment growth. A new engineering building worth $250,000 will only add to the luster of the local school. : An explosion of an acetyline gas machine caused Fred Klock of the 5 and 10 cent store to suffer painful but not critical burns while working in his basement the past Saturday. Quick action by the fire department prevented serious fire loss. : There has been a disturbing trend of crime in New York City of late with a growing tendency of assaults on defenseless women, even though who are in their homes and apartments. In one case, a mob almost killed two suspects in such a crime and there seems to be constant trouble for police to deal with.”
