J. Andrew Lingwall was promoted to associate professor in the School of Journalism at Clarion University in Clarion, Pa. Lingwall graduated from Lawrence High School, the University of Florida and the University of Washington in Seattle.

He is the son of Beverly Lingwall, Lawrence, and the late James Lingwall.

¢Sarah Szabo, Lawrence, earned a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis., on June 10. She is a 2003 graduate of Lawrence High School.

¢Several area high school students participated in the 24th annual Kansas Masonic All-State High School Marching Band Camp, conducted July 24-28 at Fort Hays State University.

The camp ended with performances in the Shrine Bowl parade and the Kansas East-West Shrine Bowl football game.

¢Elizabeth Phelps, Lawrence, graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va., on May 12. Phelps also was named to the Dean’s List for grades achieved during the spring 2007 semester.

¢The Dole Institute of Politics at Kansas University an-nounced its new Sen. Robert J. Dole Public Service Scholars for the 2007-08 academic year.

Area recipients include Charles Mersmann and Christina Pyle, Eudora; Michael Fonkert and Joanna Wakeman, Lawrence; Mary Cox, Linwood; Arthur Rollins, McLouth; Ashley Geist, Cassandra Hopkins and Tiffany Morrow, Ottawa; Hayley Barnes, Ozawkie; and Shannon Smith, Tonganoxie.

Recipients receive a $1,000 scholarship, renewable for three years, and commit to completing 100 hours of civic activities annually. The honorees are all 2007 graduates of Kansas high schools and will enroll this fall at one of the six Kansas Board of Regents universities or Washburn University in Topeka.

¢Danyelle Johnson was selected to attend the 2007 Congressional Student Leadership Conference at Wagner College in New York City. The conference, sponsored by LeadAmerica, is a leadership program for academically talented high school students.

Johnson, a senior at Olathe North High School, is the daughter of Steven Johnson and Chalisa Gadt-Johnson, both of Olathe, and the granddaughter of Larry and Jacqueline Gadt, Lawrence.

¢Lawrence High School’s Class of 1962 is preparing for its 45th class reunion, set for Sept. 14-16. Activities include dinner at Don’s Steak House, attending an LHS football game, a tour of the school, a dinner and dance at the Lawrence Holidome and an informal breakfast. Members of the LHS classes of 1961 and 1963 are also welcome.

¢A team of Kansas University students are finalists in the annual Disney ImagiNations competition.

KU students Lauren Daly, Justin Eakes, Hannah Fiechtner and Tammy Takaishi are among 31 college students and professionals from five countries on 11 teams that were selected as finalists.

Teams design a ride, attraction, hotel or a land within an existing Disney theme park or resort. The KU team’s entry, “Spy Twins,” features a ride that takes guests on the ultimate spy experience. With twin spies Conner and Mackenzie at their side, guests set off on a mission that includes state-of-the-art spy gear, an airplane drop and a final chase.

The teams were scheduled to visit Walt Disney Imagineering on July 16-27 in Glendale, Calif., to complete their projects, make professional presentations to the judging panel, interview for internships and participate in the awards ceremony.

¢Michelle Colgan, Lawrence, participated in two American Junior Simmental Association events this summer. In June, she competed in the North Central Regional Classic in Kearney, Neb., and received first place in senior public speaking and eighth place in sales talk.

In July, she attended the National Classic in Louisville, Ky., and was re-elected as a trustee for the North Central Region and as North Central regional vice president of the AJSA board.

The American Simmental Foundation presented Colgan with the Gold Merit Award and Scholarship, and she also won third place in interview competition, fourth place in senior sales talk, fourth place in public speaking, 17th place in senior livestock judging, 17th place in overall senior individual, and third place in senior team.

¢Friends and family of Lawrence native Christi Morgan Johnson raised about $5,500 for lung cancer research during a benefit dinner and silent auction July 23 at the 23rd Street Brewery.

The event supported Addi’s Cure, a nonprofit organization. 23rd Street Brewery contributed $650. Don “Red Dog” and Beverly Gardner brought more than 20 people with them who had joined in their 6 p.m. workout.

Johnson’s husband, Bo Johnson, a nonsmoker, was diagnosed with lung cancer in May 2006. In September of that year, the couple started Addi’s Cure, a nonprofit named after their daughter.

The Johnsons live in Cornelius, N.C. Christi Johnson’s parents, Larry and Theresa Morgan, and her brother, Curtis, live in Lawrence and organized the fundraiser.

¢The children of the late Rose Elizabeth and Henry Conrad Rinke celebrated the first Rinke family reunion June 15 in Lawrence. The Rinkes were longtime residents of Eudora.

¢Rachel Lane Gardner, Lawrence, received a performance award in art for the 2007-2008 academic year from Bethany College in Lindsborg. The award is renewable for up to four years if specific academic standards are met. Gardner graduated from Lawrence High School.
