Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 3, 1907: “Only 732 and 171 juvenile tickets have been issued at the city library since the new program began. Old cards have been phased out and new ones issued but officials are surprised at the low usage. They add, however, that summer is always slow with no school and moratoriums on club meetings where reading is featured. : H.B. Ober and wife have bought the interest in the Ober Clothing Co. at 821 Mass. and will now have complete charge of it. Mr. Ober has been manager for several years and plans a big sale to inaugurate his ownership. The store is to be completely overhauled. : It is said that keeping gas meters cool in summer can lower the gas readings, thus the bills. In hot weather, the meters are noted for registering more natural gas than the meter-holder is using and plumbers say cooling of the meters can result in savings.”
