Bonds fails to homer, but Giants win

Giants 4, Dodgers 2

Los Angeles – Barry Bonds’ bid to dent Dodger Stadium ended with a slow walk, rather than a historic trot. After three more homerless games, the slugger heads south to San Diego where Greg Maddux will try to keep Bonds from hitting the single home run he needs to tie Hank Aaron’s record.

Bonds went 0-for-2 with a pair of walks in the series finale.

San Diego – Jake Peavy struck out 10 to pass 1,000 for his career.

Pirates 5, Cardinals 4, 11 innings

Pittsburgh – Pinch-hitter Jose Castillo singled home the winning run with two outs in the 11th inning, and Pittsburgh beat St. Louis.

Nationals 7, Reds 3

Washington – Ryan Zimmerman and the rest of Washington’s suddenly potent offense gave Cincinnati starter Phil Dumatrait a rude welcome to the major leagues.

Mets 12, Brewers 4

Milwaukee – Milwaukee Johnny Estrada and manager Ned Yost nearly tangled in a dugout tunnel late in Thursday’s loss to New York, the Brewers’ 10th defeat in 14 games.
