Yanks (not A-Rod) flash power

Yankees 16, White Sox 3

New York – Everybody but A-Rod.

On the night the New York Yankees tied a franchise record by hitting eight home runs in a rout of Chicago, Alex Rodriguez had none.

Instead, he stayed stuck at 499 and watched his teammates connect all night long. After completing his 0-for-5 performance, he even flipped his bat to a boy sitting behind the dugout.

A-Rod is hitless in 16 at-bats since he connected against Kansas City last Wednesday. His teammate had no problems going deep.

Hideki Matsui homered twice, and Jorge Posada, Bobby Abreu, Melky Cabrera, Johnny Damon and Robinson Cano hit one apiece for New York, which pulled within three games of Cleveland, the AL wild-card leader.

Blue Jays 2, Devil Rays 0

St. Petersburg, Fla. – Former Tampa Bay bat boy Jesse Litsch threw 62â3 shutout innings against his old team.

Litsch (4-4), a Devil Rays bat boy from 2000-02, gave up seven hits in his first pro start at Tropicana Field. The right-hander, who has allowed one earned run or less in four of five starts since being recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on June 28, struck two and walked one.

Toronto won for the seventh time in 10 games. Tampa Bay has lost 26 of 33 since June 25.

Athletics 7, Tigers 3

Oakland, Calif. – Kurt Suzuki and Jack Cust each hit two-run singles in the sixth inning to help Oakland snap a four-game losing streak. Dan Haren (13-3) was the beneficiary of the four-run rally and outpitched fellow All-Star Justin Verlander (11-4) to win his third straight start. Haren allowed three runs – two earned – and six hits in six innings to give the A’s their first win since the last time their ace pitched.

Orioles 5, Red Sox 3

Boston – Erik Bedard allowed two hits over six innings to win his seventh straight decision, and Baltimore beat Boston despite two homers by David Ortiz. Bedard (11-4) struck out six and walked five to give Baltimore its sixth victory in seven games.

Rangers 3, Indians 1

Cleveland – Brandon McCarthy won for the first time in more than two months, beating 13-game winner Fausto Carmona and leading Texas over Cleveland.

Angels 8, Mariners 0

Seattle – Gary Matthews Jr. hit two home runs, his first homers in six weeks, and John Lackey threw a six-hitter in his first complete game of the season
