Kansas trips OU, claims series

? Kansas University senior Kyle Murphy went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and four RBIs in the Jayhawks’ 9-3 baseball victory over No. 27-ranked Oklahoma on Sunday at Mitchell Park.

Junior Andres Esquibel pitched 32â3 innings of scoreless relief as the Jayhawks earned their first Big 12 Conference baseball series victory of the season.

After the Sooners loaded the bases with nobody out in the fifth inning, Esquibel came on in relief of starting pitcher Wally Marciel.

The 6-foot-3 junior recorded a pop out, an RBI ground out and a strikeout to end the threat.

KU followed with six runs in the next three inning to bust open a 3-3 game.

Murphy tagged a two-run double, followed by an RBI hit by Robby Price.

John Allman and Murphy added insurance runs with homers in the seventh and eighth.

Allman’s homer, a solo shot to center field, was his third of the season, while Murphy’s was a two-run shot down the left-field line.

Earlier, Buck Afenir slammed a two-run home run, his sixth of the season.

It marked the fourth time this season that Kansas hit three home runs in a game.

The Jayhawk defense turned a season-high four double plays in the game and stranded 11 Oklahoma base-runners.

Allman, Erik Morrison and Casey Larson each had two hits for KU, which improved to 22-26 overall and 8-13 in Big 12 play.

Oklahoma dropped to 28-17 and 8-10.
