Thome headed for DL
Chicago – White Sox slugger Jim Thome is likely headed for the 15-day disabled list with a rib cage injury, according to manager Ozzie Guillen.
Thome left Friday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels after fouling off a pitch in the first inning. He re-aggravated a right rib cage injury that caused him to miss the two previous games.
S.D. therapist pregnant
San Diego – Kelly Calabrese, the Padres’ sports therapist who was belittled on the air last year by Keith Hernandez, will leave the team before the All-Star break because she is pregnant.
Toronto activates Glaus
Toronto – The Blue Jays activated third baseman Troy Glaus from the 15-day disabled list Saturday and put him into the starting lineup for their game against the Texas Rangers.
Infielder Ryan Roberts was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse to make room on the roster. Toronto also demoted right-hander Josh Towers to the bullpen and moved Victor Zambrano into the rotation.
Carpenter throws bullpen
St. Louis – Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter, sidelined since opening day by an elbow injury, threw a bullpen session Saturday in the latest step in his rehab.
“He had a good throw, he felt fine,” manager Tony La Russa said. “The big key is tomorrow. We need to make sure he bounces back the way he’s supposed to.”
