Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for April 27, 1907: “The Battleship Kansas recently put into commission is a source of pride for our state. Efforts are being made to have as many of its sailors come from Kansas but at last reports, there was trouble getting a big enough crew. : Manhattan is advertising that ‘over 46 percent more of the young women graduates of the State Agricultural School get husbands than of any other school.’ This looks like a dastardly slap at KU. : The new Wichita directory ‘indicates’ that the population is 47,000. This ‘indicates’ to us that the directory was gotten up altogether by home talent census-takers. : A man was arrested last night on the charge of picking pockets of members of the YMCA at the association building, stealing while the men worked out. He was fined $25 and had to pay the penalty of remaining in the city jail all night. For some time there have been problems of missing money and valuables at the YMCA this arrest could solve that.”
