Convicted sex offender returned to county

A convicted sex offender who fled the area before his sentencing is back in Douglas County Jail.

Former Lawrence resident Joseph Schwartz was booked into the jail at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

U.S. Marshals captured the convicted child molester April 13 at the Grand Canyon.

Schwartz is facing more than 12 years in prison after being convicted of two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

He had been free on bond, pending his sentencing, and then didn’t show up for that court appearance.

Schwartz waived his extradition and was brought back to Douglas County. He’s scheduled to appear before a Douglas County judge Friday afternoon.
