Blaming victims

To the editor:

Once again, the police department is telling the “victims” how to avoid having their property stolen (“Parking lots a target for thieves,” Journal-World, April 22). Every time I read something like that, I wonder if they are acknowledging the presence of “sin” in the world. (I guess if there weren’t sin, they’d be out of a job.) And I also wonder why they aren’t reminding people of the best advice, “Thou shalt not steal.” If that’s too religious, how about, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

To the “victims” (and I have been one), my best advice to you is to avoid owning anything that owns you. There’s a real freedom in that.
