Donna Mitchell of Lawrence, a Kansas University junior, was named queen of the annual Engineering Exposition at KU and cut the ribbon to open the event, a popular feature of Kansas Relays weekend.
Nine separate cases of auto vandalism were reported here overnight, with damage running high. Unlocked cars were the most popular targets with a number of interiors being severely damaged.

The Lawrence City Commission endorsed a commitment made the past November by the previous commission – the issuance of $300,000 in industrial revenue bonds for Curtis 1000, an envelope company from Atlanta, Ga.
Rees Jackman, elected to the school board the previous month, took over the post of the veteran Carl Althaus, who had resigned three months before his term expired in July.
