Area high schools notebook
Several area high schoolers earned medals at the Kansas Relays on Saturday. Most notably, Ottawa’s Darius Johnson took fourth in the boys 400-meter dash with a time of 50.02 seconds.
¢Mill Valley’s Justin Woods, who will play football at Kansas State next season, took sixth in the boys 100-meter dash. Woods ran the 100 in a time of 10.94 seconds. The result came as a bit of a surprise because Woods ran the event in 10.56 seconds in the preliminaries.
¢Mill Valley also placed 15th (out of 32 teams) in the boys 800-meter relay with a time of 1:33.30. The relay consisted of Woods, Matt Sittenauer, Nick Woods, Josh Grimes, Colin Orand and Myron Collins.
¢Baldwin’s Heather Garcia finished fifth in the girls 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:08.60.
¢Baldwin finished 28th (of 36 teams) in the two-mile relay. Team members were Chris Elniff, Brad Canterbury, Aaron Karlin, Kyle Smith and Caj Kueffer. The Bulldogs ran the relay in a time of 8:41.25.
¢Ottawa’s Peoples Kearsten finished sixth in the girls discus with a throw of 39.14 meters.
