Agency plans for world’s best weather forecast
Tokyo ? The Meteorological Agency wants to improve its weather predictions and by as early as the end of this year have the world’s most accurate weather forecasts, it has been learned.
For example, with the help of a new supercomputer, atmospheric observation points can be increased to more than 100 million. This means the agency could reduce the margin of error in the projected path of a typhoon by 20 percent, reducing the width of this path to 260 kilometers from the current 320 kilometers.
Weekly forecasts, which currently have a 70 percent accuracy rate – already one of the highest rates in the world – will, the agency hopes, be boosted a few more percentage points.
